Cattle market question?
I pastured 2 red angus X steers for the summer. I gave $115/cwt for them at time of purchase. They weighed about 400 when I bought them in the spring. I have one sold to a Friend but I have not set a price yet. He wants to butcher his in a month or so. first they have not increased that much in frame although they have gained some weight. they are on irrigated pasture plus 1 gallon livestock feed each a day. How much should I charge for the 1 steer? And should I guess on live weight or should I charge on hanging weight. Not really a public scale nearby.
The place where I take mine to be processed has a live Weight Scale. Check with the place you are planning to have it done and see if they do.
You need to recover your feed costs for sure. And your pasture is worth something too, as is your labor and the cost of delivery. If you charge $1.15/lb live weight you ought to come out OK but not make an excessive profit. Since this is “organic” beef, that is a fair price and a whole lot cheaper than what he could buy at the supermarket.
If they don’t have a live weight scale at the processing plant, maybe you could take it past a feed store or fertilizer dealer on the way to the butcher, weigh your truck with the steer in it, and weigh it again empty on the way back.
